Thailand, the country of free men
December 2001

We enter in Thailand by the North-East, direction the West of the country near the Myanmar border. The bus stops in Chiang Maï, second city of the country by its number of inhabitants. That's the occasion to discover this city sheltering more than 300 temples. The Thais people told us: "You can't know Thailand if you didn't see Chiang Maï! ". The city is splendid and with beautiful temples and very rich of history.

We go then in a small mountain village called Om Paï. Over there, the NGO Children of Mekong sent there a cooperant girl (a bamboo according to their vocabulary): Sophie. She deals with English course for children of the ethnos groups Karen and Lawas. To give one year of its life for these children: It is great !
Because of the arrival of winter, Sophie ask solidarity to correctly equip these children on www.nomadesonline.com.

Then we discover the South of Thailand and the paradisiac island of Kho Chang with its white sand beaches and its Caribbean blue sea. We swim towards a small isolated island like on the movie " The Beach ". The sole inhabitant of the island opens us a coconut and offers us its juice for refreshing. We are in paradise!

After one week of break, we take again the best means of transport of the country: the bus. Direction: another program of Children of Mekong : le center of Yasothon. In this center, children victims of maltraitance, drug or AIDS.

From 1 to 12 years, these children have a past always very outstanding. This boy, at the age of 5, fled from his house where he was beaten and made 1000 km to reach the capital to work there. This small 5 year old girl who cried every evening and seems inconsolable. When you just touch her, she has a violent movement of retreat and cries even more. It's unbearable when you learn that she has been raped several times by her father when she was only 2 year old and that gave her as a gift AIDS. You can't bear when you realize that she will live only until the age of 10 or 11. But this center is the most affactionate that we had visited for the past 5 months of trip through the NGO. After only 2 minutes of presence, you have 2 or 3 children in the arms. They require from you what their parents couldn't give them and they are greedy of tenderness.

Thailand is a country of contrast. While becoming, one of the economic Dragons, it became a great country of South-East Asia and invested in infrastructures. The central position of Bangkok makes this capital a quasi-obliged passage in Asia. But the economic situation is degraded. The prostitution develops on poverty, sometimes only simple possibility for the girls to earn money, supplied with sexual tourism, but also by a local request. The propagation of the AIDS is this way facilitated.
